“Should we shift?” Isabella asked, and Jaden could hear the fear in her voice—fear she was masking successfully from her scent.

“I don’t think I can,” he admitted. “The shock from the taser has messed up something. My wolf is silent. I think that’s why I can’t feel the Pack.”

Something touched his hand, and he looked down to find Isabella’s fingers slipping between his. Ignoring his natural instinct to distance himself, he gave her fingers a gentle squeeze. “We’ll figure it out. Somehow, we’ll get out of this.”

“You don’t believe that any more than I do.”

“If we say it loud enough, whoever is out there might believe it, though.”

She laughed, which had been his aim. A laugh which broke off when a loud bang sounded and a thin crack of light broke through the darkness. The slim line grew larger as the door swung open, and the change from dark to bright put them at a disadvantage. One Jaden knew was on purpose.

He drew on his other senses. He could smell the female Shifter and the male human from the road near Sanctuary, but there were additional scents. At least two, in fact. But, until his eyes adjusted, he couldn’t tell for sure.

“Jaden, I think—” There was a noise, the soft expulsion of air and then a thud. Isabella jerked beside him, her fingers tightening around his.

“Jaden …” she whispered, and there was a strange tone to her voice. One which had him turning toward her.

“Izzy?”

Time seemed to freeze as Jaden’s vision cleared. Isabella was facing him, one hand pressed against her chest, her face pale, and her eyes focused on him.

“I … Jaden?” she looked down at the red liquid pooling between her fingers with a confused frown.

“Fuck … Izzy.” Jaden placed his hand over hers and looked around wildly.

The female Shifter, the man, and two others dressed in navy-blue uniforms stood watching. One of the soldiers had a pistol pointed at him.

“Press down,” he told Isabella, fighting to keep the horror from his voice. “Just press down, Iz.” He begged as he twisted to look at their silent spectators. “Why?” he demanded hoarsely. “She’s no threat to you.”

The male stepped forward. “I don’t need her. I have too many females already. As beautiful as the female wolf is, it is older than most of my current stock. She would be taking up space we could use for something else.”

“Then why take her?” he roared. Isabella sagged, and he caught her before she fell to the floor. “You could have left her and just taken me!”

“An uncaged Shifter is a dangerous Shifter,” the male replied coolly. “If it’s not in a cage, it needs to be killed.”

“You’re a Hunter, then?” Jaden gently lowered Isabella to the floor of the container. Her breathing had slowed, both their hands covered in her blood. “Izzy, look at me,” he pleaded, and her eyes fluttered open. “I’m sorry.”

“Not … not your fault,” she told him gently. “I thought it would hurt more.”

“Don’t talk.” Jaden bent his head to hide the wetness on his lashes.
